A local football team strode to victory recently in an underdog triumph, bagging the cup title at a locally held match.
With all of the odds against them, the Heaton Hawks under 17’s squad won the last game of the season in an intense penalty shootout against Kingston Park, to mark the final of the Pin Point Recruitment League securing the Central Youth Division Cup.
The Benton based team, sponsored by Newcastle’s aptly named Budget Taxis, beat their opponents, scoring five penalties to their three after an intense 90 minutes ended in a one-all equaliser. The 14-strong team train at The Manor on Coach Lane in Benton, meeting twice a week to be put through their paces by longstanding manager Jason Gosling and assistant coach Jonathan Ward.
Thanks to the ever growing support of regional cab firm, Budget Taxis, the team are able to excel in appearance as well as skills. The taxi company has supported the Heaton Hawks under 17’s team since they were in fact an under 11’s team, donating £500 per season to purchase new strips for the boys.
Heaton Hawks’s manager and taxi driver Jason Gosling, 38 from Benton explains: “This was possibly one of our most important matches to date, we’ve never won the Central Youth Division before – we came close, getting to the final last year but unfortunately got beat 1-0. There are eight teams in the league and we managed to make it to the final again so as you can imagine, the boys were ecstatic and determined to win this time round.
We’ve had amazing support off our sponsor Budget Taxi’s, we can’t thank them enough, I think confidence on the pitch sometimes comes from the way you look, and with our new kits each season, we would fit in with any premiership football club. Budget’s involvement doesn’t stop there; it’s great to see their faces at all of our matches too, rain or shine.”
Sales manager at Budget Taxi’s Eddy Binks added: “It’s been an honour to be associated with Heaton Hawks, they are a great bunch of lads with excellent potential, and the cup win is just what they needed to give them a confidence boost, taking them to the next level. We have sponsored the team for over six years now and will continue to do so long into the future. They truly look the business in their new kit.” The Hawks playing in all blue faced a tough match in the junior league final against Kingston Park.
Originating from the fifth division, Heaton Hawks have been promoted each season, climbing their way to the top and went into the recent game with their heads held high promising to give as good as they got. Their opposition was strong, often ranked at the top spot so nerves were high as the teams took their place on the pitch.
The match started with Kingston Park scoring the first goal, and then things took a turn for the worst as the Heaton Hawks incurred injuries and had a player sent off. With the team down to only ten men, things weren’t looking hopeful as the game was drawing to an end, then just as spirits began to damper, the Hawks managed to pull it back scoring a much needed equaliser. The game went to extra time, and in the last minute Kingston Park were awarded a penalty, with a fantastic save from the keeper, the Central Youth Division Cup winner was to be decided upon through penalties alone. The game ended in a 5 -3 victory to the Heaton Hawks, with goal keeper Joseph Angus, taking home the ‘Man of the Match’ title due to his impeccable penalty saving skills that kept the blues on top.
