The Grange Opening

The lord and lady of the manor…

Transforming the face of luxury accommodation in the region, a local couple have joined forces to bring an exciting new venture to the region.

Shotton Grange, a well known landmark on the Great North Road and part of the Blagdon Estate, business partners Paul Wappat and Penny Dane have embarked upon a full scale restoration plan culminating on Friday 7th February of a lavish bed and breakfast, to be known as The Grange.

With an opulent interior designed to match the exterior fabric, the grade II listed building will offer an eclectic mix of old and new décor teamed up with plush furnishings.

Speaking of the new business, co-proprietor Paul Wappat explains:

“Having both run our own businesses in the past, Penny and I really think that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something we’ve always felt passionate about.”

With an impressive eye for detail, the entire experience at The Grange has been designed to match the important and imposing building. Set in its own three and half acres of private land the venue offers an unrivalled seclusion and intimacy.

The rustic charm of the Blagdon Estate and appeal of Northumberland a stay at The Grange boasts a feeling of comforting grandeur. Wappat, former radio broadcaster in the region goes on to add:

“Our only aim is to give our guests an unforgettably unique experience in a spectacular setting. We’d like to invite our guests to indulge in the environment we’ve respectfully created and truly feel like they’re the lord and lady of our manor.”

Using only the finest, locally sourced ingredients for breakfast, the award winning Blagdon butcher and Blagdon farm shop will be supplying an unsurpassable experience.

Penny adds: “I studied and qualified in the hotel and catering industry over 30 years ago and spent my early career working in hotels and restaurants. Getting back into the field of hospitality is something I’ve wanted to do for a while.

“I’ve lived at Blagdon for quite some time and I saw the opportunity I’d been looking for when The Grange became vacant.”

Viscount (Matt) Ridley, who is cutting the ribbon to open The Grange on February 7th at 11am, was born and brought up at Shotton Grange.

He told us:

“I’m delighted to see that what was once my childhood home will be used to bring joy and comfort to Penny and Paul’s guests.  I’d like to wish them both every success in their venture and will look forward to seeing the business thrive.  At Blagdon we are always delighted to try and help the local economy and encourage new businesses by providing suitable premises.”

Positioned at the gateway to Northumberland and just a stone’s throw away from ‘Northumberlandia’ The Grange is situated only six miles away from the centre of Newcastle, close to Newcastle International Airport and just minutes away from Northumberland’s stunning coastline.  The Grange is also home to one live resident hare, which Penny adopted as a pet, and lives in the manor with them.
